The Office of Science is responsible for scientific peer review activities for IES grant applications and reports. The Office is headed by the Deputy Director for Science, and it sits within the Office of the Director. Having peer review activities managed outside of the IES Centers that fund research grants and contracts, provide technical assistance to applicants, and work with grantees and contractors, helps to ensure that peer review processes are as objective as possible.
The Office of Science was created and staffed to comply with the Education Sciences Reform Act (ESRA) of 2002. In January 2006, the National Board for Education Sciences approved IES procedures for the peer review of reports and grant applications.
